BBFK January Blog

With the start of the new year, a new president in office, and COVID-19 vaccines being more widely distributed, we are hoping this year runs more smoothly and things start looking up. We have these same hopes for our program as this year at Building Blocks for Kids, we are focusing our efforts on raising money and developing the MORE program for Animo Compton Charter. Our college interns at BBFK have been doing outreach in order to get volunteers, corporate sponsors, and organizations to partner with us and help us build the program.

We have had our ups and downs for the month of January 2021 and here are just a few of them:

  1. With the start of the school year, our college interns have been limited in the amount of hours they could allocate throughout the week.

  2. Despite the number of grant applications we have filled out, we’ve been turned down or not received approval because our non-profit is “too small”.

Despite these setbacks, we have had our number of ups this month as well:

  1. Despite being busy with school, we had our high school intern contribute 10 volunteer hours for the month of January and the college interns also placed in  about 125 hours of work doing outreach, working on the BBFK website, filling out grant applications, working on the curriculum for the MORE program, and looking for more interns to join our team.

  2. We had a call with Northrop Grumman, PwC, Arby's Foundation and a few others with the hope of  creating a partnership between BBFK and these organizations.

  3. We have made contact with many volunteers and organizations who are willing to collaborate with us in order to help us expand the career development segment of the MORE program.

Overall, it's been a great start to the new year and we have high hopes for the future. As we step into February, Black History month, we want to remember the wise words of Jackie Robinson who said “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” At Building Blocks for Kids we hope to be the stepping stone to help students succeed in their futures and any help we can get through donations will allow us to bring forth this goal. You can help make an impact by donating through Donorbox, PayPal or Benevity Causes Portal.
